Privacy Policy

Purpose: Informing users of this website about the BnF’s personal-data-processing policy and how the BnF uses cookies

The purpose of this privacy policy is to inform users of the “Fantasy: A Once and Future Genre” website about the BnF’s personal-data-processing and cookie-management policies in regards to the site.

While browsing this Site, users may follow hypertext links to the websites of the BnF’s partner institutions and business partners, which will have their own privacy policies. For information concerning how those partner sites process your data, or how to exercise your GDPR rights on those sites, you will need to contact them directly.

Personal Data Processing Policy

The BnF hereby declares that all personal-data processing carried out on https://fantasy.bnf.fr/en is in compliance with the rules and regulations in terms of the protection of personal data in effect, including, most notably, European General Data Protection Regulation 2016/679 (GDPR) of 27 April 2016, and the modified French Information Technology and Freedom rules n° 78-17 f 6 January 1978.

  • Purpose of the Data Processing

All data processing is carried out for the purpose of managing the “A Once and Future Genre” website.

It enables:

  • Preparation and publication of content on the website.
  • Management of the bibliographic data concerning digitalized documents from the BnF’s and its partner institutions’ collections that are available on the website.
  • Management of the site’s availability to users, in accordance with Article 5 of the Terms and Conditions of Use (T&C).
  • Management (reception and replying to) website users’ requests and complaints sent to editions-multimedias@bnf.fr .
  • Production of anonymous statistics about traffic and use of the services provided on the website (geolocation of user’s city or town via the Xiti cookie referred to below requires that cookie to temporarily collect users’ IP addresses).

  • Legal Basis for Processing

Article 6 (1) of European regulation 2016/679 (General Data Protection Regulation - GDPR) states, “processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest or in the exercise of an official authority.”

  • Data Processed

The processing carried out concerns the following data:

  • The first and last names of the authors of content published on the website.
  • Bibliographic data concerning digitalized documents from the BnF’s or its partner institutions’ collections that are available on the website.
  • Users’ data provided freely by them within the context of contacting the BnF.
  • Within the framework of implementing Article 5 of the T&C only: users’ IP addresses.

Statistical and traffic data do not contain personal identifiers. Nonetheless, for geolocation (by city) purposes – and for that purpose only – users’ IP addresses are collected and anonymized by the Xiti cookie before being communicated to the BnF’s services. That processing is, therefore, different from other kinds of processing carried out by the BnF.

  • Automatic Decision-Making

Automatic decision-making is not provided for in our processing.

  • Data Recipients

Data concerning content and documents published on the website is available to everyone who uses the site.

The BnF’s services are the only recipients of data transmitted by users to the website in the context of contacting the BnF.

The BnF’s services are the only recipients of IP addresses collected when Article 5 of the T&C is implemented.

Users’ IP addresses are collected by AT Internet, the publisher of the Xiti (a web-traffic and
-analytics cookie – cf below) in its role as a sub-contractor – as defined by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – to the BnF for geolocation purposes that are limited to the city or town only, in compliance with CNIL guidelines in terms of using cookies and other trackers (ruling n° 2019-093 of 4 July 2019).

The BnF can also be required to transmit users’ personal data in the case of potential judicial subpoenas.

  • Retention Period

Data concerning content and documents published on the website is preserved for as long as necessary for it to be made available to those who visit the website.

Data transmitted by users of the website when they contact the BnF will be retained by the BnF only for as long as it takes to process the request or complaint. Once the request or complaint has been processed, the data will be deleted, unless an extended retention period is required in order to deal with a potential legal issue.

If Article 5 of the BnF’s “Fantasy: A Once and Future Genre” website’s T&C are implemented, users’ IP addresses are retained for as long as they are blocked. Users’ IP addresses are collected by the Xiti cookie and retained long enough for geolocation purposes (by city). Once geolocation has been achieved, the IP address that was collected will be deleted or anonymized, in compliance with the CNIL’s aforementioned ruling of 4 July 2019 (Ruling n° 2019-093 of 4 July 2019).

  • Safety

The BnF is committed to implementing and applying any safety measures it judges necessary to guarantee the confidentiality of data collected on the Site for the time required to process it, in compliance with the aforementioned “Information Technology and Freedom” law.

  • Understanding and Exercising Your Rights

In compliance with personal-data regulations in effect, you have the right to access your personal data. You also have the right to correct, delete, contradict and/or erase that data.

Visit the cnil.fr site for more information about your rights.

Please write to the following address – dpd@bnf.fr – for any requests, information or questions about exercising your rights to your personal data. Please specify the subject of your request and include valid ID. If, even after you have contacted the BnF, you believe that your rights concerning your personal data are not being respected, we advise you to file a complaint with the CNIL.
